Session Description: Delve into solidifying your understanding of the leading cause of disability in children and adolescents, according to the Centers for Disease Control--Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). This session will also cover pediatric non-TBIs. Children with brain injury become adults with brain injury. However, we learned from Jean Piaget that a child's brain is not an adult's brain. Therefore, it is critical that supports, resources, and services are in place for children who sustain these injuries, so they are appropriately supported as their brain matures and develops through their late 20's. This session will talk about what a pediatric brain injury is, post-brain injury impacts to learning, why and how resulting cognitive and behavioral impacts often manifest over the years, key differences between TBI and other types of learning disabilities, and facets of important educational legal frameworks that schools work within to best support students post-brain injury. Bridging rehabilitation and educational language to facilitate effective communication will also be a focus.
By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
Identify the main differences between an acquired brain injury and other learning disabilities.
Understand the nuances of pediatric acquired brain injury.
Describe the academic impacts a student’s concussion can have on school performance and new learning. Identify the importance of understanding and utilizing important education terms and their implications during different phases of recovery.
About the Presenter
Brenda Eagan-Johnson, EdD, CBIS has over two decades of experience in the field of pediatric brain injury. Dr. Eagan-Johnson is the State Program Coordinator for Pennsylvania’s BrainSTEPS: Child and Adolescent Brain Injury School Consulting Program, which is a nationally recognized model. She received her master’s degree in the educational aspects of pediatric traumatic brain injury from The George Washington University, where she now serves as an adjunct instructor in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development. Dr. Eagan-Johnson holds a Doctor of Education degree in educational neuroscience, Mind, Brain, and Teaching from Johns Hopkins University. She is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist, holds three PA teaching certifications, and serves on two national advisory boards. She is published in pediatric brain injury, regularly presents at the state, national and international levels, and has received multiple state and national awards for her work in brain injury. Dr. Eagan-Johnson served as an expert external reviewer for the CDC and co-authored a CDC document on return to learn strategies following mild TBI. She co-authored the first national Concussion Return to Learn consensus for the National Collaborative on Children's Brain Injuries. This consensus has endorsement from leading national organizations. Spearheading development and creation of PA’s Return to Learn Concussion Management Team Model, she has trained over 3,000+ school-based teams in Pennsylvania and Colorado.
